Utah Environmental Education Certification

Registration for Spring 2018 Now Open

The Utah Environmental Education Certification Program establishes high standards for the professional qualifications of environmental educators in Utah. The program was created by a diverse team of experienced Environmental Educators from across the state who worked with representatives from a variety of national organizations to set specific standards of knowledge, skills, and experience that highly qualified Environmental Educators in Utah should be able to demonstrate.

Certified Environmental Educators are those who can demonstrate skills in the following areas:

  • Environmental Literacy
  • Foundations of Environmental Education
  • Program Development and Design
  • Program Assessment and Evaluation
  • Professional Responsibilities

Why should you apply?

Good for you as an individual:

Certification serves as an important step in the professional development of individual educators. In meeting the standards of the program candidates more fully master both the theory and practice of Environmental Education, making them more effective as professionals. Participating in the program can also provide excellent networking opportunities.

Good for the field of Environmental Education:

The certification program helps define knowledge, skills, and ethical standards required to effectively practice Environmental Education and helps to ensure credibility of the field.

Course Information

The Utah Environmental Education (EE) Certification is comprised of 2 ONLINE courses, the Foundations of EE and Applications of EE. Each course runs 15 weeks in conjunction with the Utah State University semesters.  Provisional Certification status can be obtained by completing one course.  Full Utah EE Certification requires completion of BOTH courses and final approval of the Utah EE Review Board. There is no prerequisite and the courses do not have to be completed in a particular order.

: Foundations of EE

In this course we'll delve into two main aspects of EE: environmental literacy and fundamentals of environmental education as a field.  We will use the history of EE to understand the current issues in the field, distinguish between education and advocacy, and explore regional and national trends that impact environmental education. We will investigate the ecological concepts that underpin environmental literacy through an exploration of the process of science, of ecological processes and systems, and citizenship skills and responsibilities. This course has no pre-requisites and is designed to complement the Applications of EE Course.

Course 2: Applications of EE
Start Date:  August 28, 2017

Course Fee:  $150

This course is designed to complement efforts that students are already doing at their respective places of work, or to help prepare them for future jobs.  Each week will focus on a different aspect of planning and implementation, evaluation and assessment and the professional responsibilities of the environmental educator, which will give environmental educators the opportunity to develop and improve EE programs.  As part of the course, students may develop evaluation tools and apply them to their existing programs.

Please note, the full certification process cost is $300.  The nonrefundable/nontransferable fee is $150 PER COURSE payable to USEE.
