New Staff

USEE welcomes a new Education Outreach Coordinator
We are proud to welcome Nancy Carruthers, who is joining our team as USEE’s new Education and Outreach Coordinator. She will help strengthen the capacity of quality and effective environmental education EE programs in Utah through non-formal educator and teacher partnerships.  Nancy is currently completing her Masters degree in the Department of Geography at the University of Utah.  She received her Bachelors degree in Geography at the University of Utah and became interested in paleoclimate and wildfire research.  Her research project is examining the relationships between drought, wildfire, and the timing of snowmelt.  She hopes to help expand and strengthen environmental education throughout the state, along with instilling a sense of stewardship in people for their natural resources.

We are happy to welcome a new volunteer, Autumn Garrison, to USEE. Autumn is the new chair of USEE's Communication's Committee.  Autumn and other committee members will help set communication goals for USEE.  Autumn is a second year PhD student in the Department of Communication at the University of Utah. Autumn completed her Bachelors degree at Northern Kentucky University majoring in Speech Communication and Marketing.  She received her masters degree in Communication from the University of Cincinnati, with an emphasis in Environmental Communication.   Her current research focuses on the development of marketing and advertising strategies that can be used by grassroots and other environmental groups (student groups included) to communicate more effectively to the public about health and environmental issues.

Special Thanks

USEE would like to extend our thanks to all our donors, board members and other guests, who took part in our 11th Annual benefit Bash and Awards Ceremony.  This year’s event was the most successful on record!  We enjoyed a fun-filled evening amongst a great community of people, great musical entertainment, and an exciting auction!  Thank you to everyone for their continued support of USEE and our EE efforts throughout Utah.  We would also like to give special thanks to the following organizations for their generous contributions: Squatters Pub Brewery, Alta Ski Resort and Colorado River and Trail Expeditions.

Did You Know..?

What the Planet Eats…….How does the food we eat reflect who we are?

A family in Chad and a Family in China with a weeks worth of food

Hungry Planet: What The World Eats does just that. Photographer Peter Menzel and writer Faith D'Aluisio traveled the world from Darfur to China to Germany. They visited 24 countries, from the wealthiest to the neediest, and photographed what families there eat during the course of a typical week.  It is really interesting to see how much packaging is used from around the globe, as well as what everyone is eating.

Peter also has a similar book published back in 1994 entitled, Material World: A Global Family Portrait. In this book, instead of food, he photographed all the belongings of families around the world.

Utah Environmental Education EE Certification Program
Application Deadline - December 15, 2007
The Utah Environmental Education (EE) Certification Program recognizes EE providers who have demonstrated specific knowledge, skills, experience and conduct in the field of EE, and who adhere to high ethical standards.  Certification has a variety of benefits for individuals, organizations, and the field of EE.  Individual educators often find that the certification process serves as an important step in their professional development. In meeting high standards of the program, candidates more fully master both the theory and practice of EE, making them more effective as professionals. Perhaps equally important is the statewide network of professional environmental educators that the program fosters.  To learn how to apply for the Certification Program, and its requirements, please visit http://usee.org/capacity/certification or call Andree' Walker at (801)328-1549.
