The Recycling Coalition of Utah (RCU) presented the Salt Lake City Department of Airports with an award for the Local Government Recycling Program of the Year. The award is given annually to individuals and organizations that are creative and passionate about recycling in Utah. The RCU recognized the airport’s concourse recycling program, office paper and cardboard recovery plan and its glycol recycling system.
In 2004, the airport recycled 147 tons of cardboard, 25 tons of office paper. From the concourse recycling bins, 62 tons of plastic and newspaper were recycled in 2004 by the traveling public. Around 200 tons of deicing fluid (glycol) is recovered, processed and resold annually. Twenty-six tons of scrap metal was also recycled in 2004. The airport’s vehicle shop recycled 4,725 gallons of motor oil, 399 tires and 234 batteries last year. The airport encourages construction contractors to recycle as well. In 2004, the following construction materials were recycled: 53,500 cubic yards of asphalt, 12,000 cubic yards of concrete and 43,000 cubic yards of soil and plant material. | | |
