main_conference_logoThe 2009 Annul Utah Environmental Education Conference was held at the Wasatch Retreat and Conference Center and was a huge success!  There were so many great things going on from the fantastic facility in downtown Salt Lake to the great presentations, and wonderful speakers.  It was fun to see old friends and to meet new ones, too.  A big THANK YOU goes out to everyone who attended, presented, sponsored, educated, nominated, networked, share-faired, commented, criticized, cooked, cleaned, addressed, ate, socialized, learned, laughed, and especially to the Wasatch Retreat and Conference Center who hosted the 20th Annual Conference.  Really, we could not have done this with out all of you. And now for some highlights!

Check out some conference photos on the USEE Blog!

Keynote Speakers

Vern Fridley and Tim Brown - Vern Fridley, one of the four founders of USEE, gave an inspirational speech about his accomplishments (which are many!) in the field of before, during, and since starting USEE. Tim Brown, who worked with Vern before becoming the Executive Director of USEE, tag teamed with Vern to talk about the path EE has taken in the past and how they are hopeful for the future.
x
Robert Michael Pyle - On Friday night, Robert Michael Pyle joined us before the Share Fair and Social gave a fantastic talk about his explorations as a child that led him to be the naturalist writer he is today. He spoke very eloquently and asked everyone to take a hard look at why, and how, natural places are important to us all. After his fun and inspirational talk, Bob entertained us all during his book signing by chatting with each person who had questions or a book to sign during the Share Fair. What a great way to end the first day of the conference!
x
Karen Hollweg - On Saturday afternoon, Karen Hollweg (the President of the North American Association of Environmental Education) spoke of the trends she is seeing in the environmental education community on a national level. She spoke of the past in her work with Vern as EE began to take shape, her present work with the NAAEE, and how she is hopeful for the future of EE. Karen provided a very hopeful outlook and was a great way to wrap-up the fabulous keynote speakers for the 20th Annual EE Conference.

Field Trips

Whether participants explored the The Nature Conservancy's Shorlands Preserve, trekked to the Hogle Zoo for a lesson in environmental conservation, or explored the partnerships between EE and dance, the field trips were informative, got us out in the fresh air for a bit, but most of all fun!
